     Marion Thelma Hayden, age 92, passed away Monday, March 8, 2010 at the Vernon Manor Nursing Home where she had been a resident since November 17, 2005. She was born in Westby on October 7, 1917 to Albert and Sophie (Nedland) Anderson and grew up on a farm near Esofea. Marian attended a country school and later graduated from Viroqua High School and then Vernon County Normal School. She then taught in several country schools in the Viroqua area. On June 8, 1940 she married Phillip Hayden at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They farmed in the township of Sterling for almost forty years before retiring in 1979. She was a member of North West Prairie Lutheran Church.

        Marion enjoyed a long and joyful life sharing both the hard work and the quiet satisfactions of a small family owned dairy farm nestled in a deep valley in the Bad Axe watershed. Cherishing her family and close-knit rural community, she lived in peace amidst the people, animals, gardens and beautiful hills and coulees that she loved. Proud of her Scandinavian heritage, Marian still remembered the Norwegian phrases that she had learned during her childhood in Esofea. Always helpful and ever caring, she will be remembered with love by all who knew her.

        Marian is survived by two sons: Wayne (Alyce) Hayden, Leland, NC, Lee (Yolanda) Hayden, Madison; three grandsons: Wayne (Debbie) Hayden Jr., Leland, NC, Derek Hayden, Orlando FL, Trent Hayden, Nashua, NH; great granddaughter: Annika and great grandson: Paul, both of Leland, NC; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother: Ray Hayden and sisters: Anita Goldberg and Sadie Ellis.

         Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Reetz-Thorson Funeral Home, Viroqua with burial to follow in the Viroqua Cemetery. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Kathy Ingbritsen. The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.

Roger “Dudder” Lee Nelson Sr., age 65, of Readstown, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 06, 2010 at Hess Memorial Hospital, Mauston. He was born on February 14, 1945 in Viroqua to Cecil and Sadie (Berg) Nelson. Roger graduated from Readstown High School with the class of 64. On October 21, 1972 he married Ruth Larson. Together they had three children and six grandchildren. Roger’s many career endeavors included: Truck Driving, Mechanic, Farmer, Small Business Owner and Rodeo Clown. Dudder enjoyed hunting, fishing and football. Dudder had a larger than life personality that touched all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

Roger is survived by his wife: Ruth; two daughters: Sadie Nelson, Sarah (Dan) Vondrashek, all of La Crosse; son: Roger L. (Casey) Nelson Jr., Viroqua; five grandchildren: Genieva, Ivy, Storm, Zeleny and Mattea; sisters: Geraldine (Paul) Dull, Readstown, Shirley (Dan) Davis, Wyocena; brother: Brian Nelson, Westby; many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family including his best friend: Fred. Dudder was preceded in death by his parents; special grandson: Indago, whose nature was one in the same as grandpa; brothers: Terry, David, Ronnie and Duane.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 12, 2010 at Reetz-Thorson Funeral Home, Viroqua. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Kathy Ingbritsen and Pastor Steve Fossum. Burial will take place at a later date. The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.

Kenneth “Ken” R. Dryden, age 74, of Viroqua, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday morning, February 24, 2010 at his home. He was born August 31, 1935 in Madison to Cecell and Florence (Cooper) Dryden. Ken graduated from high school in Madison. On October 6, 1961 he married Mary Lou Hazelton and they had two children: Bronwyn and Michael. Ken was employed at Cana Mutual in the Electrical Maintenance Department for many years in Madison.  Due to his parents and wife being deaf, Ken gave a life time of service to the hearing impaired. While in Madison, Ken was involved in many different organizations, which included Pack Leader for Michael’s Boy Scout Troop, Eagles Aerie 623, serving as president, Country Music Association, serving as secretary and the Capital Cordsman Barbershop Quartette that would sing on Valentines’ Day and hand out a Rose to some lucky lady and move on to the next. In 1982 Ken and Mary Lou traveled to Germany, and Ken with his cowboy boots and white hat was mistaken for J.R. Ewing. Mary Lou passed away in October 1990. On June 9, 2001, Ken married Lee (Jacobson) Bergum and moved to Viroqua. Continuing his love of traveling, Ken and Lee traveled to Alaska, California and Missouri to name a few places and many stops along the way at different Eagles Clubs all over the country. He then transferred to the Viroqua Eagles’ Club Aerie 2707 where he served as president and secretary. Ken Loved to bowl with his cowboy hat and had his boots made into bowling shoes because they were more comfortable than regular shoes. He enjoyed many different interests and hobbies and things at different times of his life but took great pride in his stamp, coin and album collections and his genealogy work on the computer. Ken was not shy in telling stories or good jokes. Ken always had a sincere smile and knowledge of how things worked. Ken enjoyed country music, playing cribbage, riding his Goldwing Motorcycle, spending time with his friends and family but most of all, spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. May God bless Ken; you will be missed and always loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife: Mary Lou Dryden in October 1990; brother: Dan Dryden; son-in-law: Eric Erickson and step granddaughter: Stacey lee Johnson.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at the Reetz-Thorson Funeral Home, Viroqua. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Lindsay Jordan. The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, February 27, 2010 from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will take place in Madison at Sunset Memorial Gardens on Saturday, March 6, 2010. A memorial service will also be held in Madison at a later date with time and location to be determined.

     Dr. Milan Avery Berge, age 56, of Middleton, passed away suddenly, Monday, February 8, 2010 as a result of a brain hemorrhage. Milan was born on February 6, 1954 in Viroqua to Marcus “Mickey” and Marilyn (Lavold) Berge. He grew up in Folsom and attended Kickapoo High School. Milan graduated from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse and went on to the University of Kentucky where he received his Master’s and Doctorate in Toxicology. He worked for Covance Laboratories located in Madison. Milan enjoyed his golf, weekends on the farm, gardening and was a long time trumpeter with the “Alumni Band” in La Crosse. He was also a member of Kickapoo United Lutheran Church. To Milan, everyday was “72 degrees and sunny”, a concept still widely held by many of his friends. He was loved by most, but will be sorely missed by all.

          Milan is survived by his mother: Marilyn Berge, Folsom; brother: Charles Berge, Falls Church, VA; many friends and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father: Marcus “Mickey” Berge.

          Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at the Kickapoo United Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Carlson officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, February 12, 2010 at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua and again at church an hour prior to the service.



     Arnold Ludwig Nelson, age 73, a resident at Vernon Manor Nursing Home, died Thursday evening, January 28, 2010 at Vernon Memorial Hospital. He was born on January 23, 1937 in Vernon County to Ludvig and Anna (Jacobson) Nelson. Arnold graduated from Readstown High School in 1955 and then entered the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the USS Collett. After the navy, he spent many years farming and doing concrete work. Arnold was loved by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren very much and will be greatly missed.

     Arnold is survived by a daughter: Rhonda Nelson; son: Keven (Heather) Nelson; grandchildren: Ambrosia (Dennis) Stockemer, Jonelle Frazier, Jordan Bonner-Nelson, Sunshine Nelson; great grandchildren: Keyondre Phiffer, Aurora and Devon Stockemer; brother: Marvin (Jean) Nelson, Viroqua; sisters: Lucille (Richard “Dick”) Jacobson, Viroqua, Aleda (LaVerne) Sherry, Soldiers Grove, Margaret Simonson, Viroqua; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Ruby Larson and a brother and sister as children.

      Funeral services will be held at 6 P.M. on Friday, February 5, 2010 at Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Kathy Ingbritsen with military honors to follow at the funeral home accorded by the U.S. Navy Honors Team, Running-Johnson-Ray V.F.W. Post 3032 and Jacobson-Olson American Legion Post 138. The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 P.M. until the time of service at 6 P.M.

   


     Florine Elizabeth Johnson, age 84, a resident at Bethel Home, died Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Bethel Home, Viroqua. Florine was born on January 2, 1926 in Roanoke Rapids, NC to L. Thomas and Florence (Shell) Liverman. After graduating high school, she married John Edward Johnson on February 24, 1946 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. Florine was a wonderful military wife who enjoyed traveling, crafting and sewing. She was active in church groups and choirs where ever the military lead her. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

       Florine is survived by her husband: John Edward Johnson, Viroqua; daughter: Brenda (Joe) Adams, Viroqua; son: Donald (Debbie) Johnson, Port Orange, FL; three grandchildren: Lisa (David) Semrau, Destin, FL, Tim (Emily) Call, Viroqua, Emily (Jason) Irwin, Ft. Riley, KS; two great grandchildren: Hailey and Cooper Semrau; sister: Geraldine Jones, High Point, NC; sister-in-law: Ophelia Carr, Lanexa, VA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.

        Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 5, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Askew Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, NC with burial to follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, February 4, 2010 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Askew Funeral Home. The Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua is assisting the family with local arrangements.



      Nevada Silverpony, age 60, of St. Peter, MN, died Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Emmanuel St. Joseph Hospital, Mankato, MN with his mother at his side. He was born on January 28, 1949 in Agentia, New Foundland at the U.S. Naval Hospital to Jarvis and Shirley (Halverson) Ekker. Nevada worked for Vanguard Company in California where he was top salesman for many years and then moved to Carson City, NV and worked for the Health & Education Dept. for a few years until moving to Minnesota. Nevada was a great musician and artist. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

          Nevada is survived by his mother and step dad: Shirley and Jay Sherburne; step sister: Dauna Ellis, Boise ID; niece: Joy Middlebrook; two great nieces: Amber and Bridgette; great great nephew: Seth, all of Danville, AR; numerous friends and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father: Jarvis Ekker and a brother: Gary Ekker.

          Private family services will be held at a later date.

        If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I’d walk right up to Heaven and bring you home again.



     Helen C. Wallace, age 85, of Viroqua, died Saturday afternoon at Vernon Memorial Hospital, Viroqua. She was born on March 31, 1924 to Rudolph and Edith (Saxton) Thorgerson in Jefferson Township, rural Viroqua. She worked at the Fortney Hotel until she married Clayton F. Wallace on August 24, 1944 at the parsonage of Rev. D.T. Borgen. Helen and Clayton farmed in Liberty Pole and Asbury Ridge for thirty-four years. Helen was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was active in many aspects of the church. She also enjoyed embroidering. Helen will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

          Helen is survived by her brother: Melvin Thorgerson, Viroqua and her beloved cat and companion of 15 years: Bootsie. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Clayton Wallace on October 30, 1984; her son: Harlin Wallace on July 24, 2002 and a sister: Stella Thorgerson on May 9, 1998.

         Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Kathy Ingbritsen with burial in Asbury Cemetery, rural Viroqua. The family will greet relatives and friends on Wednesday at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.



     Duane “Dewey” Laverne Stellner, age 56, of Gays Mills, died Thursday morning, January 21, 2010 at Vernon Memorial Hospital, Viroqua. He was born on September 8, 1953 in La Crosse to Richard and Delores (Goede) Stellner. Dewey worked on the family farm for several years and on March 18, 1972 he married Cindy Davidson at Bethany Lutheran Church, Esofea. Over the years, Dewey worked in many aspects of the logging industry. He logged, worked in the saw mills and most recently was self employed as a saw filer. Dewey truly enjoyed his work. He loved people. Dewey was a friend to all that crossed his path. He had a special way with people that few have. You felt you’d known him a lifetime after having just met him. Dewey sure loved children and was always there to help lighten the burdens that life tossed at them. He was amazingly wise. Dewey knew something about everything and there wasn’t a situation that he couldn’t take on and handle. He had a wonderful sense of humor and he never lost that. Just a few short hours before his death he was bugling like a bull elk, just being, “Good Ol’ Dew.” Dewey enjoyed the outdoors, there’s nothing he liked better than hunting and fishing with his friends and family. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, son and friend. Words cannot express how much Dewey will be missed.

      Dewey is survived by his wife of over 36 years: Cindy; four sons: Shannon, Milwaukee, Shaun (Christy), Viroqua, Nate and Ryan, at home; mother: Delores (Walter) Miller, La Crosse; father: Richard (Betty) Stellner, LaFarge; mother-in-law: Arlene Stellner, Esofea; three sisters: Diane (Roger) Spensely, Stoddard, Cathy (Al) Sagler, Viroqua, Lisa Simonson, La Crosse; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was unexpectedly preceded in death by his daughter: Sarah Stellner on April 26, 2005.

       Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 25, 2010 at Bethany Lutheran Church, Esofea, rural Viroqua. The family will greet relatives and friends from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua and again at church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.

       The family suggests memorials in lieu of flowers.

    

     Clair John Bohlen, age 78, of Viroqua, died Friday, January 08, 2010 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, La Crosse. He was born on July 16, 1931 in Oak Park, IL to Clair Sr. and Agnes (Tierney) Bohlen.  In January of 1952 he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany until being honorably discharged in 1953. On November 16, 1960 he married Elsie “Faye” Welch in Chicago IL. Clair lived an adventurous life full of challenge, rewards and excitement. He lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for 5 years where he set up a computer system for his company, Glidden Paint. In 1980 he returned to the states where he was promoted to Director MIS Latin America. Clair then established computer centers for Glidden in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama and Ecuador. He traveled throughout Latin America until his retirement in 1986. Clair and Faye then bought a hobby farm near Avalanche and for 9 years raised chinchilla’s. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Viroqua Eagle’s Club Aerie 2707and enjoyed golfing. Clair would like everyone to be happy for a life “Well Lived” and not to be sad. He was indeed fortunate and blessed with a wonderful family and late in life was again blessed with Selma Froiseth and another fine family who always showed him love and respect and asked for nothing in return. Yes, Clair had a very good life.

     Clair is survived by a son: George Kendall, Chaseburg; two daughters: Charlotte (Ronald) Taylor, Anderson, IN, Barbara Kendall, Paragon, IN; four grandchildren: Paul (Tia) Kendall, John (Susan) Taylor, Ronald Taylor, Donna Kay Taylor; eight great grandchildren; sister: Kathleen Stonis, Shell Knob, MO; Froiseth family; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son: Brian Jeffery Bohlen; grandson: Jeffery Kendall; brother-in-law: Ralph Stonis and special friend Selma Froiseth.

     Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua. Officiating at the service will be Father Robert Cook. Burial will follow in the Viroqua Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by Jacobson-Olson American Legion Post 138, Running-Johnson-Ray V.F.W. Post 3032 and the United States Army Honors Team. The family will greet relatives and friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 12 (NOON) until the time of service at 1 p.m.

     In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bethel Home & Services in Clair’s name.



     Carl “Doc” Fabian Falk Sr., age 86, of Avalanche, died unexpectedly at his home on January 4, 2010. Doc lived a very modest and simple life. He had a very unique love for animals and gardening instilled in him. He will be missed deeply by his family and friends. Doc, rest in peace, love your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and his pets.

        Private family services will be held with burial in Acacia Park Cemetery, Chicago, IL.

        Memorials may be made to the Vernon County Humane Society.

     Robert “Bob” Victor Baker, age 58, of Naperville, IL, went home to be with His Lord and Savior January 3, 2010 on the Thompson family farm in Viroqua, WI, surrounded by his wife, daughters and grandchildren.  Bob was born on September 25, 1951 in Tucson, AZ to Lorraine (Zehr) and the late Roger J. Baker.  He graduated from Seneca Township High School on May 29, 1969 and joined the Navy at age 17.  He gladly served his country at the Naval Air Station in Albany Georgia as an E5 medical coreman for four years where he received the National Defense Service and Good Conduct Medal.  Upon discharge on June 15, 1973, he returned to Viroqua at age 22 where he met Alice Thompson.  They were married at Bethlehem Baptist Church on November 12, 1974.   Bobs love for the military led him back to the Navy on November 22, 1974 where he served as an E6 medic at the Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado, California. Upon a second honorable military discharge in 1976, he and his family relocated to Illinois where he spent several years working in varied leadership positions at local manufacturing companies.  His love for the medical field and compassion for people led him back to school at age 38.  He attended Waubonsee Community College where he attained an Associate Degree in Applied Science, graduating May 18, 1995.  He used his skills as a registered nurse (RN) in a variety of roles working in occupational health, outpatient dialysis, emergency department, the jail system and both acute and long term care. Bob and his wife Alice were married for over 35 years and lived in various parts of Illinois, most recently in Naperville, close to his two daughters and four grandchildren.  He regularly attended and was involved at Harvest Bible Chapel.  Bob enjoyed fishing, food, music and talking about politics and the Lord.  He was a fabulous story teller, hard worker and a most compassionate care giver.  He will be greatly missed. 

            Bob is survived by his wife: Alice; two children: Stephanie (Curtis Watson) Baker of Evanston IL, Christina (Michael Helverson) Baker of Naperville, IL; four grandchildren: Jack, Caden, Maddix (Watson) and Brynlee (Helverson); his mother and stepfather: Lorraine (Zehr-Baker) and Byron Russell; three sisters: Diane Baker of Westby, Pam (Soltau) Baker of Viroqua, Karen (Crume) of Viroqua and brother: Roger Allen Baker of Texas. He was preceded in death by his father Roger J. Baker.

            Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua. Officiating at the service will be Byron Russell with burial to follow in the Viroqua Cemetery. Military honors accorded by the Jacob-Olson American Legion Post 138, Running-Johnson-Ray V.F.W. Post 3032 and the United States Navy Honors Team. The family will greet relatives and friends from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 6, 2010.


     William “Bill” Paul Moffitt, age 79 died on Monday evening, December 28, 2009 at Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse after suffering a severe stroke on Tuesday, December 15, 2009.  He was born on November 11, 1930 in Binghamton, New York to William and Matilda (Dugan) Moffitt. He then entered the U.S. Army in 1951. During the Korean War he served with the 3rd Infantry in Washington, D.C.  On November 22, 1952 he married Elizabeth “Betty” Jones in Washington D.C.  In 1954 Bill began working in the super market industry. He operated grocery stores in La Crosse and in Viroqua. In Viroqua he supervised Super Valu, Piggly Wiggly, Bill’s Market, and Ted and Freds prior to his retirement.  During retirement Bill served as Viroqua’s Industrial Development Coordinator. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and had served as Commander of Jacobson-Olson American Legion Post No. 138 in Viroqua. Bill was also a member of Viroqua’s LaBelle Lodge #84 Free and Accepted Masons. He was an active member of the Viroqua Partners and had served on the Vernon Memorial Hospital Board. Bill enjoyed golf, hunting, and a good game of euchre.

       Bill is survived by his wife;  Betty, one daughter; Susan (John) Nielsen of Kansasville, WI, three sons; Timothy “Tim” (Elaine) of Tower Lakes, IL, Joel (Jennifer) of Rochester, MN, Andrew “Andy” (Brynna) of Ashland, WI, five grandchildren, David Nielsen, Ashley Moffitt, Courtney (James) Peart, Chloe Davidson, Meghan Moffitt, one great granddaughter; Natalie Nielsen, one brother; James Moffitt of Binghamton, NY; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Jean Cizauskas.

         Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Viroqua. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Lindsay Jordan with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery at a later date. Military honors accorded by the Jacob-Olson American Legion Post 138, Running-Johnson-Ray V.F.W. Post 3032 and the United States Army Honors Team. The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, January 1, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua and again on Saturday at church from 9 a.m. until the time of service.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Viroqua Area Foundation or the Vernon Memorial Hospice Program.


     Elmira Catherine Vangen, age 92, a resident at Bethel Home, Viroqua, formerly of De Soto, died Monday evening, December 28, 2009 at Bethel Home. She was born on August 9, 1917 in Sterling Township, Vernon County to George and Mabel (Aberg) Brudos. On June 20, 1939 Elmira was united in marriage to Elmer Vangen in Waukon, IA. They lived on their farm near Retreat for nearly 65 years. Elmira was a member of North West Prairie Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and was involved in WELCA and the Naomi Circle. She loved to fish, knit, bake and play 500. Elmira knitted many baby sweaters and gave them to the Lutheran World Relief. She was one of the cooks at the Retreat Fair for 16 years. Elmira loved her family very much.

     Elmira leaves to mourn her three sons: Robert (special friend: Nancy) Vangen, Stoddard, Larry Vangen, La Crosse, Thurman (Judy) Vangen, Ferryville; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; two great great granddaughters; brother: Norman (special friend: Marilyn) Brudos , Viroqua; sister-in-law: Sally Brudos, La Crosse; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Elmer Vangen on April 1, 2007; daughter: Debra Vangen on April 12, 1959; brother: Gerald Brudos; twin sisters in infancy; two nephews: Steven and Roger and a great niece: Stephanie.

     Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at North West Prairie Lutheran Church. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Grant Van Lishout with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday December 31, 2009 at North West Prairie Lutheran Church.



     Inger M. Phillips, age 98, a resident at Vernon manor, Viroqua, died Saturday, December 26, 2009 at the Manor. She was born on July 4, 1911 in Westby to Ben J. and Sofie (Mathisen) Eie. She graduated from Westby High School with the class of 1929 and then attended Vernon County Normal School for Teaching. Inger then taught in area country schools.  On December 24, 1933 she married Theron Phillips at the Church of Christ Parsonage. The couple then farmed on Salem Ridge from 1935 to 1958 and then moved to Viroqua in 1977. Inger also worked at Vernon Memorial Hospital as a Nurses Aid for 23 years.

     Inger is survived by her son: Blaine Phillips, La Farge; three daughters: Barbara Larson, Westby, Marlene (James) Adler, AZ, Sara Jane (Evan) Parker, Janesville; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Theron Phillips on October 1, 1982; brother: Andrew Eie; half brother: Harold Nelson and a son-in-law: Richard Larson.

     A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. (NOON) on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the LaFarge Free Methodist Church. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Mark Phillips with burial in the Coon Prairie Cemetery, Westby. The family will greet relatives and friend on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the LaFarge Free Methodist Church from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 12 p.m. (NOON).

Leona "Jean" Bergum, 80, of Viroqua, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 23, 2009.  Jean was born to Leonard and Iva (Cole) Skrede on February 11, 1929 in Vernon County.  She was united in marriage to Alf "Joe" Bergum on August 23, 1947 and later divorced in 1983.  Jean loved to cook, dance, sing, and play cards.  She managed the VFW kitchen for many years and cared for adults with disabilities until retirement.  Jean served as a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary and the Rachael Circle at the Bad Axe Lutheran Church.  She had many friends and was well known for her quick witted sense of humor.  There is a special place in our hearts that only you can fill.  We will miss you dearly.

Jean is survived by her children:  Deborah (Gerald) Wurl, Janesville; Cynthia (Gerald) Amundson, Janesville; Lori Krause, La Farge.  Grandchildren:  Robert (Pam) Oliver, Janesville;  Shannon Oliver, Viola;  Shelly (Patrick) Anderson, Janesville;  Danielle Amundson, Janesville;  Andrea (Nicholas) Gilberts, Prairie du Chein;  Sisters:  Muriel Halverson, Viroqua;  Connie Nundahl, Janesville;  Jan (Marlen) Halverson, Soldiers Grove. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Leonard Skrede Jr., Kenneth Skrede, brothers-in-law:  Gary Olson, LaVerne Halverson, Kenneth Nundahl, and son-in-law Kent Krause.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 28, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua. Officiating at the service will be Pastor George Shick with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery.      Gordon Ray Hanson, age 74 of De Soto, died on Saturday morning, December 19th, 2009 at his home in DeSoto.  He was born on September 8, 1935 in De Soto to John and Irene (Hunter) Hanson. He attended Viroqua and De Soto High Schools and graduated with the class of 1954. In 1955 he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1957. After returning home he farmed in the Redmound area. On May 23, 1959 he married Arlene Marks. Gordon continued farming and over the years, hauled milk and drove school bus for De Soto Area Schools. Gordon then worked in the Maintenance Department at Thornton Manor Nursing Home doing electrical work. He held different officer positions at the Redmound Cheese Factory and was a member of the Electricians Association. After retiring, Gordon worked at Ace Hardware in La Crosse. Gordon enjoyed Square Dancing, camping wood working and fishing.

Gordon is survived by his wife of over 50 years: Arlene Hanson, De Soto; son: Jacob (Sarah) Hanson, La Crosse; grandchildren: Jessica (Kevin) Koster and Jeremy Hanson; two brothers: Melvin (Eileen) Hanson, La Crosse, Clayton (Lois) Hanson, Viroqua; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Grant Van Lishout with burial to follow in Walnut Mound Cemetery, Retreat, rural De Soto. Military Honors accorded by the Genoa-De Soto American Legion and United States Army Honors Team. Edith (Edythe) Bea Marie Larson, age 82, died Friday evening, December 18, 2009 at Bethel Home in Viroqua where she had been a resident since February 2009. Edith was born on the family farm, Jefferson Township, Vernon County, rural Viroqua, on September 22, 1927 to Bennie and Mathilda (Hanson) Larson. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. She graduated from White Pigeon School and received her GED from WWTC. Edith worked alongside her parents on the farm. During the declining health of her parents, she provided tender, loving care for them. In 1982 Edith purchased her home in Viroqua. Over the next years she was employed by various families where Edith provided in-home care for individuals in a compassionate manner. Edith was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, especially in circle and WELCA. She was a member of the Sentimental Singers, AARP and the Bethel Home Auxiliary. Family was important to Edith and she enjoyed being the hub of information. She looked forward to the family picnics and the updating of genealogy. Edith liked to visit people and to travel around the area. Edith took trips to Branson, Paris, London and Ireland. She took the initiative to find a ride to many community activities and was appreciative to all who helped her. She was a kind and generous person, a person willing to go out of her way for someone. Edith had great patience. There was a wittiness about her. Everyone who knew her liked her and enjoyed her company. During her illness, she exemplified her religious faith and trust. She accepted her fate with grace, dignity, inner peacefulness and cheerfulness. Edith told visitors she was on her way to meet Jesus in Heaven.

Shirley Margaret Mossholder, age 85, of Elroy and formerly of Viroqua, died Tuesday evening, December 15, 2009 at Heritage Manor Health Care Center, Elroy.  She was born on February 22, 1924 in Freeman Township, Crawford County to Thomas and Ida (Hetland) Bolstad.  She was baptized and confirmed at West Prairie Hauge Lutheran Church.  She was united in marriage to Harold Mossholder on January 17, 1942 in Viroqua.  They were members of West Prairie Hauge Lutheran Church until it closed in 1990.  They then joined Franklin Lutheran Church in Folsom.  Harold and Shirley farmed at rural Westby until 1946 when they moved to Nash Ridge, rural Ferryville and farmed for 38 years until 1984.  In October, 1984 they retired and moved to Viroqua.  Harold died on June 6, 1996.  Shirley moved to Heritage Manor in Elroy in 2006.

            Shirley is survived by one son: James (Mary) Mossholder of Elroy; one grandson: Richard (Donya) Wegner of Altoona; one great granddaughter: Emma Rose Wegner of Altoona; one sister: Jeanette Bolstad of Elroy; two brothers-in-law: Lurl (Dorothy) Mossholder of Bloomingdale, and Vern Soltau of Onalaska; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.  She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother: Verner Hetland, brothers and sisters-in-law: Clarence and Irene Mellem, Bert and La Vonne DeWitt, Floyd and Alvina Teal, Jean Soltau, Russell and Phyllis Mossholder, Leland Mossholder, Carroll Mossholder and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

            Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at the Franklin Lutheran Church at Folsom with Pastor Pete Beckstrand officiating.  Burial will be in the Viroqua Cemetery.  Friends may call at the church after 11 a.m. on Saturday.  The Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home in Viroqua is serving the family.


     Julia Etta Mellem, age 85 of Ettrick and formerly of Viroqua, died Sunday, December 6, 2009 at Tri-County Memorial Hospital, Whitehall.  She was born on January 4, 1924 in FreemanTownship in Crawford County, rural Retreat to Horace and Lois (Host) West.  She worked as a waitress at the Oriole Café in Viroqua and during World War II she worked at Trane Company in La Crosse.  On July 11, 1942 she married Oscar Offerdahl and he died on December 27, 1945 after getting discharged from the U.S. Army.  On December 10, 1947 she married Norman “Pete” Mellem.   They lived in Viroqua and Mr. Mellem died on October 12, 1974.  She worked as a sales clerk for the J.C. Penny store in Viroqua for sixteen years.  In 1976 she moved to rural Ettrick where she served as a housekeeper for the Erickson Brothers on their farm. In October, 1999 she moved to an apartment in Ettrick.  

Julia Etta is survived by a daughter, Judy (Dennis) Parsons of Arizona, a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Mellem of Viroqua, a grandson, Chad (Heather Johnson) Mellem of La Crosse, a great grandson, Jake, a great granddaughter, Miranda, both of La Crosse, a brother, Clendon (Lynette) West of Lamont, IA., several nieces, nephews,  other relatives and many friends.     She was also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Glenda Mae Haakenson in 1998 and Gwendlyn West. She was also preceded in death by her son, Loren Mellem on August 6, 2009.

      Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, December 11th, 2009 at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home in Viroqua with Pastor Bill Busch.  Friends may call at the funeral home after 10:30 a.m. on Friday.

           

Helen Elizabeth Munson, age 76 of West Salem and formerly of De Soto died on Tuesday evening,   December 1st,  2009 at Franciscan Skemp in La Crosse.  She was  born at Red Mound, rural DeSoto  on June 13, 1933 to Albert and Edna (Sallander) Munson.  She attended school in DeSoto and for several years made her home with her mother.  She has been a long time resident of Lakeview Health Center in West Salem.  She had joined Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in West Salem. She enjoyed reading and was an active participant in all activities provided at Lakeview.  She enjoyed living with her many friends at Lakeview and her family appreciated the wonderful care she received.  She is survived by her sister, Joyce (Norman Ellefson) of La Crosse, two nephews, Norman (Cindy) Ellefson II of Stoddard, Dean (Lenora Parr) Ellefson of La Crosse, one grand nephew, Zachary Ellefson serving with the 10th Mountain Army in Iraq and a grandniece, Miranda Ellefson.  She was preceded in death by her parents. The family suggests memorials to the activity department at Lakeview.

      Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 7th, 2009 at Lakeview with Pastor Dave Bersagel officiating.  Private burial will be at the DeSoto Cemetery in DeSoto. 


Alton Ray Hulbert, age 73 of Viroqua, died Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at Vernon Memorial Hospital, Viroqua. Private family services will be held at a later date.


Eric Lee Wetter, age 44, of Viroqua, died unexpectedly Monday morning, November 30, 2009 at Vernon Memorial Hospital. He was born on June 11, 1965 in Boscobel to Stan and Marlene (Wayne) Wetter.  Eric attended Boscobel schools and graduated with the class of 1983. In July of 1983 he married Laurie A. Ashmore at the Boscobel Methodist Church. The couple then moved to Viroqua where Eric started working for Sanwick Farms LLC. He started milking and as the farm grew he worked all aspects of the farm. Eric enjoyed farming, watching the Packers and Badgers, hunting and fishing when he could, but most of all, spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a member of South West Prairie Lutheran Church.

Eric is survived by his wife: Laurie Wetter; two sons: Joshua and Dean Wetter; two daughters: Nicolle (Tony Widner) Wetter, Lee Ann (Jason) Bankes; five grandchildren: Abigail Koch, Haily and Austin Widner, Keith and Kasey Bankes, all of Viroqua; three brothers: Stan (Lori) Wetter, Bryan Wetter, all of Boscobel, Jeff (Nancy) Wetter, Benton, WI; father-in-law: Avery (Joan) Ashmore; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Jacob and Gertrude Wetter, Eldon and Nelly Wayne and mother-in-law: Charolette Ashmore

Delores Jean Olson, age 79, of Viroqua, died Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Vernon Manor, Viroqua after a long battle with cancer. She was born on August 5, 1930 in Purdy Valley to Edward and Alice (Erickson) Halverson. Delores attended school in Purdy and then married Clayton Odean Olson on August 9, 1946 at the West Prairie Lutheran Parsonage. The couple farmed for many years together. Delores also worked as a waitress and cook at many different restaurants and worked at the Viroqua Dairy Meal Site until her retirement. She also worked at Couleecap during her retirement. Delores was a member of the Viroqua Eagles Aerie 2707 Auxiliary and the V.F.W. Post 3032 Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Bad Axe Lutheran Church.

Delores is survived by three sons: Rodney (Janelle) Olson, Westby, Steve (Amy) Olson, Viroqua, Gary Olson, Las Vegas; 14 grandchildren: Marsha (Scot) Everson, Wendy (Justin Ray) Olson, Scott (Stacy) Volden, Brian (Tina) Volden, Cory Volden, Jeffrey Olson, Jenifer (Luke) Hirschfeld, Josh Everson, Justin (Bryany Sheldon) Everson, Eugene Olson, Michael (Lacy) Olson, Patty Olson and Meagan Olson; 16 great grandchildren; sister: Elaine (Hugh) Lieurance; special friends: Chris, Pat and Garnet; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Clayton Olson on May 3, 1996; infant son: Larry Clinton Olson; two grandchildren: Emily Ann Olson and Gary Olson Jr.; brother: Gerald Halverson and sister: Darlene DeGarmo.

Roger “Curly” L. Buros, age 78, of Viroqua, died Wednesday morning at Vernon Memorial Hospital, Viroqua after a long illness.  He was born on April 21, 1931 in Norwalk to Lester and Ossil (Stoikes) Buros.  He graduated from Viroqua High School in 1949 where he lettered in baseball and basketball.  He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950.  He served in Korea and was assigned with 6400th Air Police and was discharged as a Staff Sgt.  On December 29, 1956 he married June Parker of rural Viroqua.  He worked for Oswald Plumbing and Heating and while working there he became a licensed plumber.  He also worked for G & S Plumbing, Viroqua Country Club and Nates Supper Club. He later began working at Fort McCoy in the heating department and worked until his retirement in 1996.  He very much enjoyed the Cubs and Packers.  He was an avid fly fisherman until suffering a severe stroke.  He also was a great mushroom hunter.   In his younger days he played baseball with the Rising Sun and Viroqua Eagles.  He also had officiated basketball at area schools. Curly was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post No. 3032 where he had several offices.  He had served on the VFW honor guard for several years and also was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association.

Curly is survived by his wife: June; one daughter: Lynn Taylor of Viroqua; two sons: Michael (Katie) Buros of Viroqua, Bradley Buros of Viola; grandchildren: Savannah Buros, Hendrix, and Sophie Buros; one sister: Janice (Norman) Zitzner of New Lisbon; sisters-in-law: Doris Buros of Viroqua, Arlene (Earl) Gilman of Viola, Vivian Welch of Janesville; other relatives and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father in law; two sons: Alan and Daniel Buros; daughter and son-in-law: Laurie and Paul Hynek of Hillsboro; brother-in-law: Daniel Welch of Janesville; one brother: Robert “Doc” Buros and sister and brother-in-law: Marie and Arlen Buck of Barneveld.

            Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 23rd, 2009 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua with Pastor Kathy Ingbritsen officiating. Burial will be in the Viroqua Cemetery with military rites by U.S. Air Force Honors Team, VFW Post No. 3032 and American Legion Post 138.  Friends may call on Sunday from 4-6 at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home in Viroqua and at church on Monday after 10 a.m.


Lilah B. Neary, age 88, died on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at Hillview Healthcare Center in La Crosse.  She was born on January 20, 1921 in Victory, rural DeSoto to Tollef and Ida (Thompson) Brudos.  She graduated from Viroqua High School in 1939 and then attended Beauty School in Madison.  She then worked at Dorothy’s House of Beauty in La Crosse.  On July 11, 1942 she married Bernard Neary in Abilene, Texas where he was stationed in the U.S. Army prior to shipping out overseas.  After the war they owned and operated a service station in Ferryville.  Bernard died on February 21, 1988.  She continued to operate the station for several years after his death.  Lilah was a member of the Freeman Lutheran Church and VFW Post No. 8123 Auxiliary. 

Lilah is survived by a daughter; JoDean (David) Lieurance of Ferryville, one granddaughter; Sacha (Bud) Powell of Ferryville, one great granddaughter; Taylor of Ferryville, one brother; Earl Brudos of Viroqua, other relatives and many friends.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, a daughter; Jacqueline, age 9 months, a grandson, Mark Lieurance on September 24, 1976 and a sister-in-law; Vivian Brudos.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 on Friday, November 20th, 2009 at the Freeman Lutheran Church at rural Ferryville with Pastor Ted DeWald officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Friends may call at the church after 10 a.m. on Friday.


      Regina Niemyski, age 85, of rural Viroqua died on Wednesday afternoon, November 4th at her home as she wanted, surrounded by family.  She was born on April 14, 1924 in Lodz, Poland to Joseph and Julia Lisowaka.  Two days after her 16th birthday she was taken by the Germans to Germany where she worked as a domestic during the War.  Her parents and teachers were taken to concentration camps and she never saw her family again.  Field Marshall Montgomery received the surrender of the Germans at the house where she worked.  She was very proud to have met Montgomery. On February 14, 1946 she married Stanislaw “Stan” Niemyski in a civil ceremony in Germany.  On July 4, 1949 they were married in a religious ceremony.  In February, 1952 they came to the United States settling at Juda, Wisconsin.  They moved to Illinois, returning to Browntown, Wisconsin and Beloit.  In 1962, they moved to rural West Prairie, Vernon County and farmed until March 1974 when they purchased their farm in Jefferson Township.  Mr. Niemyski, a prisoner of war from September 4, 1939 until May 3, 1945, died on January 9, 1982.

      Regina loved her garden, especially the flowers.  She not only had a green thumb, her whole hand was green.  She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She loved her dogs and all of whom she named Dino, however, her last dog was named Sadie.  In 1995 she was recognized at the Veteran’s Day Program at Viroqua High School for her sacrifices during World War II.

      Regina is survived by three daughters; Teresa (Richard Rempt) Hurley of Lake Geneva, Eva (Ken Kretz) Niemyski, of Birch Run, MI, Julie (Scott) Stafslien, of Viroqua, six sons; Roman (Dawn) Niemyski of Franksville, Julian (Jerilyn Futch) Niemyski, Richard (Carol) Niemyski, Stanley (Kelly) Niemyski, Joseph (Peggy) Niemyski, and Edward (Coreen) Niemyski, all of Viroqua, twenty seven grandchildren and twenty nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband: Stanislaw “Stan” Niemyski and a granddaughter: Jennifer Niemyski.

     Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10th, 2009 at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home in Viroqua with Pastor Pete Beckstrand officiating. Burial will be in the Viroqua Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4-8 and on Tuesday after 8 a.m.


       Dr. Darrel Barton Hoff, age 76 of Calmar died on Monday, November 2, 2009 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, IA.  He was born on December 17, 1932 in Vernon County, Wisconsin to Walter and Agnes (Nelson) Hoff.  He graduated from Viroqua High School in 1951 and received a Bachelors of Arts in Chemistry from Luther College.  He married Ardith Gardner on September 3, 1954 in Vernon County.  Darrell proudly served in the U.S. Army for two tours of duty.  The first from September 8th, 1955 – November 21, 1957 at the end of the Korean Conflict. He taught three years at Westby High School. The second tour was from October 15, 1961-August 16, 1l962 during the Berlin Crisis (at the beginning of the Vietnam War).  He then earned a Masters Degree from the University of Northern Iowa and his Doctorate from the University of Iowa.  He taught at the University of Northern Iowa as a Professor of Astronomy and Science Education for 23 years; the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics for 6 years; and Luther College for 5 years.  He also substitute taught at South Winneshiek Community Schools for several  years.  He enjoyed reading and gardening. He had published three books and several papers.  Darrel was a member of the Northeast Iowa Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and the Calmar Community United Methodist Church.

 He is survived by his loving wife, Ardith; children, Andrea (Ron Haight) Hoff of Pflugerville, TX; and Adrian Hoff of Fayette, IA; two grandchildren, Sean and Neil Haight; and one brother, Duane (Dana) Hoff of Viroqua, WI., other relatives and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Bonita Jerman; one brother. Parker Hoff;  and one niece, Sonja Jerman. 

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Luther College in Valders Hall of Science, Room 2006. A second service will be held at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home in Viroqua  at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 8, 2009.  Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday after 1 p.m.  Burial will take place at the Viroqua Cemetery with Military Rites by the Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post No. 3032 and the U.S. Army Honors Team.  Memorials may be directed to Luther College, Dollars for Scholars at South Winneshiek Schools or any charity of your choice.


    Raymond “Butch” Douglas Lewison, age 62, of Viroqua, died on Saturday morning at the William S. Middleton Veteran’s Hospital in Madison.  He was born on July 11, 1947 in Viroqua to Tilman “Charlie” and Evenelle “Evie” (Brendum) Lewison.  He was baptized and confirmed at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua and graduated from Viroqua High School in 1965. He then served four years in the U.S. Air Force with assignment in Vietnam.  He was an active member of Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post No. 3032 in Viroqua where he served as Commander from 1990-1992.  He worked at NCR in Viroqua for several years and prior to retirement due to poor health he worked at the Vernon Inn in Viroqua Butch was very proud of his military service and did considerable volunteer work with the VFW activities.  

     Butch is survived by one daughter; Heather Lewison of La Crosse, four sisters; Terrill “Terry” (Conrad) Sanwick of Westby, Dianne McKibbin of three Rivers, CA., Rita Overboe of  Prescott, AZ., Tania (Mark) Jacobson of Viroqua, one brother, Robert “Bob” (Amelia) Lewison of Onalaska, one brother-in-law, Duane Everson of Northfield, MN., other relatives and many friends.   He was preceded in death by his father on September 27, 1990, his mother on July 8, 2009, two brothers; Charles “Chuck” Lewison on July 16, 2002, Dennis Lewison on January 31, 2006, one sister, Barbara Everson on January 12, 2009.  He was also preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Wayne McKibben in 2005 and Lyder Overboe in 2008.

     Grave site services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 31st, 2009 at the Viroqua Cemetery with Pastor Duane Everson officiating.  Military Rites will be provided by the Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post No. 3032. The family suggests memorials to the Viroqua Veterans Memorial of which Butch worked hard on. The Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.


Frederick William “Bill” Stephen, age 84, of Viroqua, died Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, La Crosse. He was born on April 23, 1925 in Monroe, WI to Laurence and Constance “Connie” Stephen.  He graduated from Viroqua High School in 1943.  Following graduation he joined the U.S. Army.  He later joined the U.S. Air Force and retired with thirty years of service as a Master Sergeant.  During his military career he was awarded many awards for outstanding performance in the area of military intelligence operations.  On March 28, 1953 he married Gerda Kaminski at Landshut, Bavaria, Germany.  They retired to Viroqua in 1972. Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman.  He was a member of the Viroqua Church of Christ, Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post No. 3032, Jacobson-Olson American Legion Post No. 138 and Viroqua Eagles Aerie No. 2707. 

Bill is survived by his wife: Gerda, Viroqua; one son: Frederick “Fred” (Cheryl) Stephen, Viroqua; one grandson: Kenneth Stephen, Silver Lake, WI; one sister: Patricia (Norman) Biggs, Livingston, TX; two brothers: Michael (Yongsun) Stephen and Laurence “Larry” (Helen) Stephen, both of Viroqua; one sister-in-law: Joan Stephen, Madison; other relatives and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: John Stephen.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 12th, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home in Viroqua with Elder Larry Mosher and Pastor Ethan Larson officiating.  Burial will be in the Arlington National Cemetery.  Military Rites will be provided by the Air Force Honors Team, Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post No. 3032 and Jacobson-Olson American Legion Post No. 138. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until the time of services on Monday.
